2018 Wardrobe Boot Camp – What to Keep and Cull

Out with the old and in with the new – that’s how the saying goes. We’re virtually all in the same boat, although some more than others. Following certain trends is inevitable, and very few of us are immune to the appeal of the new. However, all good (or debatable) things must come to an end, and unfortunately, many of the trends we enjoyed and rocked relentlessly in 2017 didn’t make the cut.

That’s the thing about trends – they’re called trends for a reason, the reason being they’re fleeting, and as soon as something new and perhaps improved steps onto the stage, it sends the old into the land we like to call “outdated”. This is precisely why you need to sit down and set your wardrobe straight. Take the time to curate your wardrobe, see what needs to go, what can be spared for now, and which new additions are due. Let’s do this.

Whimsical vs. Meaningful

If you’ve got an entire stash of tops with whimsical prints like “shopping is my cardio” or just “donuts,” it’s time to take them out, donate or repurpose them. The printed tops are not a thing of the past, far from it, but in the era of increasing awareness on social and equality issues, meaningful prints take center stage, which makes things along the lines of “the future is female” and similar quotes appear on the runways of powerhouses like Dior. You’ll still retain a touch of whimsy but also send a strong message, which is always desired.

The future is female tee

Frilly vs. Elegant

The festive and sultry vibe of the off-the-shoulder dresses and tops was hard to resist, so you probably ended up with a plethora of playful, ruffled items of this variety. We’re sorry to have to be the ones to tell you that the look is slowly making it’s way out the door. Instead of the playful frills, adopt a more sophisticated approach in the form of asymmetrical necklines. Spotted in the collections of Altuzarra, Isabel Marant and numerous other designers, this neckline is captivating with its level of sophistication, while it still leaves just enough skin exposed for you to show your sensual side.

Ruffle off the shoulder top

Skinny vs. Chic

We’re not exactly saying you should give up on your perfect pair of skinny jeans. What we are saying is that wide leg pants, culottes and even flared jeans are not only in style, leaving the skinny cut behind, but they’re also far more flattering on a variety of body types. You can still rock your skinny ones from time to time, but it might be best to go over your collection and make some cuts – everything that doesn’t flatter and fit you perfectly should go, and cuts that allow for more movement and are more complimentary should be made a priority.

Skinny vs. chic

The age of empowerment

As we are, just now, living in the age of female empowerment, it comes as no surprise that one of the most powerful trends with the biggest staying power is the suit. Whether it’s fitted or oversized is irrelevant, as there are so many wonderful cuts. So if you already own one, make sure you keep it. Crop tops and body-hugging pencil skirts are sexy, but is there anything better than a woman who looks both polished and sexy and the same time? Didn’t think so.

Womens power suit

The end of an era

With an increasing number of designers and brands vowing to stay away from fur, it’s safe to say that for real fur, this is the end of the road. No more Gucci fur slippers and pom-poms. Now is the time to accessorize responsibly, so let go of the fur and embrace the new age of textile accessories which aren’t only environmentally responsible, but way classier. Neck scarves, head wraps and turbans will be going strong this season, and as they were popular decades ago, chances are they’ll be here for the long haul.

Womens statement earrings

Fisherman vs. French girl

We couldn’t be more thrilled that the bucket hat trend is gone. Bring out the fedoras which will never go out of style, along with all the cute and sophisticated berets that will make any French girl envious.

Women's french girl hat

Comfort vs. Style

The last trend on its way out is the extremely uncomfortable sky-high heel trend. It’s not that those high-heels will ever lose their visual appeal, and we’re definitely not telling you to throw all your pumps and stilettos away. However, with dad sneakers being one of the most popular, not to mention comfortable trends of the season, who would want to suffer in heels when such a cozy alternative is calling out to you? Hold on to your sneakers, because thanks to the continuous rise of the athleisure trend, they will be here for you for many seasons to come.

Chic comfortable outfit

Parting ways with items you’ve loved for a year, sometimes longer, is difficult, that’s certain. But after you come to understand that by letting go you’re actually making room for future greatness, that understanding makes the process a whole lot easier. Don’t be afraid, just do it. Bloggers styling bloggers – part three

Happy Monday friends!

Who else had the day off work? I did and it was amazing. I’ve been sick lately, so it’s been nice to catch up on all things life. Here is the third look local blogger Rizelle from Tour in Style created for me. She naturally gravitates towards blushes and neutrals when dressing herself, so it was nice to see how her style translated to an outfit she created for me. I’ve never worn this combo before, so I loved it!

Bloggers styling bloggers – part two

Hi everyone!

I’m still over here beating the sickness, but I have a feeling it’s close to running it’s course (crossing fingers). On another note, here is the second look Rizelle from Tour in Style created for me. You can never go wrong with a pair of flared jeans and faux fur. I can’t remember the last time I wore this bomber – another reason why someone else styling you with your own clothes is a great idea – you end up wearing an oldie but goodie!

Bloggers styling bloggers – part one

Hi everyone!

I hope you had an amazing holiday and enjoyed some time off work – I know I did! One of the things I did on my days off was collaborate with another Columbus blogger, Rizelle from Tour in Style. She came up with the idea to style each other in three different looks using pieces from our closets. I’m always the one being asked for style advice, so someone else telling me what to wear sounded like an exciting experience. You never know what type of new outfit combinations can come out of your closet when someone else puts their eye on it. The first look she put together had a sophisticated glam vibe. This look could be worn to any type of special occasion whether it be for the office, date night or fancy dinner with friends. Having a go-to statement piece as well as timeless staples in your closet can easily help you put a look like this together.

Seeing Stars – the perfect ear jacket

Earrings will forever and always be the accessory I can’t live without. I wear them basically everyday. I have my go-to’s that I wear frequently and they tend to be on the daintier side. A pair I’ve recently added are these amazing starry sky ear jackets. The best part is that they’re under $20! I styled them with a holiday inspired look where I focused on combining different hues of pinks and reds. An embellished belt and the earrings added a festive touch.

An unexpected holiday shoe style

The holidays are always a great time to dress all fancy shmancy, but, if you live in a state that gets snow, dressing fancy can be a little tricky. Let’s face it, heels aren’t the warmest and you risk slipping on ice and falling on your tush. The older I get, the more practical I start to dress – so, this year, I’m whipping out the flat moto booties for my holiday outfit. Moto booties may sound casual, but throw on a pair of glittery tights, sequin top, leather mini skirt and a bold lip and you’ve got a look that will be sure to impress.

How would you style moto booties for your holiday look?

Christmas outfit idea

Can you believe Christmas is only a few weeks away? Oh how I miss the days of childhood where I could pull off being in my pajamas all day. Now, I need to get dressed and presentable before I go to all of the Christmas festivities. Today I’m sharing an outfit idea that’s more on the traditional side [i.e. wearing the oh so festive colors of Christmas – red and green]. Don’t worry, even though the colors are traditional I’ve added a little edge ;). I styled my favorite red turtleneck with dark green lame pants, leather jacket and pumps.

What are your go-to colors you like to wear Christmas day?

I’m loving this ear crawler from Hapiness Boutique. It’s a statement piece but minimal at the same time, and at an amazing price! Use code VANESSARENAE to get 10% off your order [valid through 1/19/18].

NYFW Recap

Hot showrooms, long waiting lines, funky smelling Ubers and an array of resting bitch faces are only a few things that made my first trip to New York and NYFW one of the best times – I mean, what would fashion week be like without those things? Despite some of the non-ideal conditions of the frantic running around, hangry-ness and motion sickness from non-stop car rides — the dimming of lights, first beat of music, and first step a model would take on the runway in a breathtaking look brought me so much joy that I cannot wait to go back.

I don’t think my experience could have been as great if it weren’t for the group of girls I was surrounded by. These ladies really knew the ropes of it all and how to get the best out of everything. Now, onto my recap!

NYFW Days 1 & 2

The trip started out not so good because our flight was cancelled the day we were supposed to fly out. That night, Olivia Palermo was doing a meet and greet at Banana Republic and unfortunately I had to miss. The silver lining is that we thought being there 6 full days was a little much – so this gave us an extra day to hang out and relax. On the second night of NYFW, we arrived at the hotel and immediately got in a car to attend a meet and greet at Thakoon with Chriselle Lim of the Chriselle Factor and Danielle from We Wore What. I was definitely fan-girling because I love Chriselle – she is my skin care guru!

NYFW Day 3

This was a super busy day. Nicole and I woke up bright and early to go get our hair done at the Amika salon – the ladies did an amazing job on our hair! I ended up getting a little riskay and chose the boxer braids style because I thought it would look awesome with my outfit. Shout out to my girl Nicole for taking some bad ass pics of me on this day!

After we got our hair done we attended the ShopStyle party. It was so exciting to meet all of the bloggers I follow on social media in person! It was so great to meet Color Me Courtney!

Jill Stuart

She had a victorian witchy vibe going on – which was absolutely stunning.

The outerwear was breath taking!

Francesca Liberatore

The textures and proportions made this designers collection a real head turner.

NYFW Day 4

This day started off great because we had the opportunity to attend another event. This one was hosted by Bloglovin’. Pastries and complimentary massages – what else could a girl ask for? It was great to meet some familiar faces and new ones! It was pretty rainy this day, so I opted for an all black look.

The balance of structure and romantic flowiness was too good.

Jenny Packham

Lady-like fit with a girl boss attitude. Obsessed with how beautiful her collection was.

NYFW Day 5

Day 5 of NYFW was a lot more tame than our first few days. We only had two shows to go to this day so it was nice to be able to recharge our batteries in the hotel room. Props to E! News channel for playing good movies on TV. On this day I opted for a very Olivia Palermo-inspired look. Even though I wasn’t able to meet her, please believe her style inspiration was still taken into consideration.

NYFW Day 6

We only had one show to attend on our last full day so we took the opportunity to site see and shop a little bit! We walked around the city and headed to an AMAZING pizza place for lunch. If you’re ever in New York, I highly suggest Sophia Pizza Shop! By the slice, cheap, no frills deliciousness. While we were out and about I opted for a skirt, tights and turtleneck. To keep my legs nice and warm I wore my favorite long down coat.

Later that night we had one more show. To be somewhat festive for Valentines Day, I styled a red and white outfit.

Her use of lace, wool and crochet was a feminine dream.

And there you have it! Needless to say I will come back at some point. For some reason I enjoyed New York in the winter more than I think I would during the summer. So we’ll see what 2018 brings!

Valentines day looks

Ohh Valentines Day! How I love all the extra chocolate that seems to be circulating around the office, home, hair salon, etc. I think in the entire time my boyfriend and I have been together we have celebrated it once – it’s not really our thing; however, that’s not to say I wouldn’t like to give you some cute Valentines Day outfit ideas.

Everyone’s style is different and how you celebrate the holiday is different too. I’ve done my best to round up different Valentines Day outfits no matter what your preference is. Don’t worry – I’ve thrown some Galentines Day ideas in there too.

Do you and your loved one go all out by hitting the town with dinner, drinks, dancing, or anything else that requires you to look supa fly? This sexy valentines day outfit is guaranteed to turn some heads.
